The idea for Mellifera Flowers was born over dinner (probably homemade pasta) in the Summer of 2019. Elle casually mentioned one day starting a flower farm, Kerstin said that had always been one of her farm goals, and the rest is history!

Well, it’s a bit more complicated. Like so many others, our plans to grow and arrange flowers for Twin Cities restaurants was derailed come March 2020. But we’d already sown the seeds, built the fence, and ordered the irrigation. As life changed dramatically for everyone that Spring, and all our promising restaurant clients pivoted to take-out, we decided to offer personal CSA shares instead. If you couldn’t visit restaurants to enjoy our blooms, we’d bring the blooms to you.

Two seasons later and our floral CSA is still the core of Mellifera. From choosing a color scheme every week to foraging for yarrows and grasses in the prairie, the weekly rhythm of the flower subscription is the heartbeat of our summer. And each year, abundant new opportunities bloom: dried wreaths to use up all the stems that don’t make it into bouquets, wedding services for couples looking for unique and intimate designs, specialty flower experiments to extend the season — and in a beautiful full-circle way, partnerships with restaurants that are re-opening and eager to showcase our work.

It wouldn’t be possible without the whole beautiful ecosystem: the goats whose manure feeds the soil, the pigs who tend the flower plot through winter, the honeybees who sing through the field, and of course, all our supportive customers.

Thank you for choosing Mellifera Flowers!

Elle she/her

Elle coordinates weekly CSA bouquets and runs the wedding services, custom arrangements, and dried florals side of Mellifera. Never not losing her hat/sunglasses/phone/snips in the field, she’s happy to have an excuse to linger in the flowers while searching for left-behind items.

Kerstin she/her

Kerstin thrives in the behind-the-scenes tasks like seed orders, seeding starts, and germination, as well as water, compost and soil health management. She’s often got a toddler in tow or a babe in a carrier whilst snipping blooms, and she loves the long light of late June for finding quiet in the flower field after bedtime.
